Travel tips

In this section a set of tips which apply for multiple destinations and general travel.

General

  • Always stack some emergency cash or a credit card in a separate location. If someone steals your wallet at least you'll need enough to travel to the nearest embassy and maybe a few night's in a hotel as most embassies are more often closed than open.
  • Check if it's eay to get around in the country if you don't speak the local language. If it does not look easy, plan your travel well by printing maps and timetables that may be found online.
  • Make a backup of your most important travel documents (passport, visa, flight tickets, etc.) online. When you lose your documents this will be very helpful as you can access it from anywhere.

Flying

  • When booking a flight, check your local travel agent, airline's websites and online 'cheap ticket' sites. Sometimes prices and ticket conditions vary a lot.
  • If you plan to change your flight dates, it may not always be cheaper to buy a flexible ticket. Two tickets on a low cost carrier may be cheaper than one fullfare ticket.
  • Most airlines (if not all) let you take only one handbag in economy class. However, usually it is also allowed to take a laptop bag. Few checkin staff will check if there's really a laptop inside.
  • To avoid the useless security check for not allowing liquids in packs over 100ml, try this. If you don't have any checkin luggage but still want to take your life threatening 120ml toothpaste, stuff it in the bottom of your bag. Put one item that is less than 100ml at the top of your bag where it's easy to see. When the security personell x-rays your bag and they open it, they'll find the small liquid item and let you right through. This one worked several times for me.
  • When booking or checking in, ask for a seat at the back of the aircraft. Most of the time it's not so busy there and the chance of being seated next to crying chrildren is not so big, since airlines ususally place them at the front.
