To get into manhattan, a very nice way is to get a subway to High Street station in Brooklyn and then walk over the bridge into Manhattan. You'll get a good impression of the size of all the buildings and you can see the statue of liberty from there as well.
If you're flying into New York, you can also use Newark airport which is also very close to the city.
